Downton Abbey AU

Did you miss me? I need you to come back

She is still here, working in that big house he had left years ago, needed to leave behind. It would have broken his heart every day. She had told him “no”, had not accepted his proposal, had wanted to stay at Downton. They had given up their young love, that seed that had been planted, cherished, nourished, kept alive for a year and a half. He had not written, had not send cards for her birthday. But she was always with him. In his dreams.

He is retired now, has opened a small shop in the nearby town, hopes every day that they’ll meet accidentally. When he sees her walking down that street it feels as if they had never been apart. He finds the courage to write to her then, lets her know how he feels, that he still loves her. Letters pass between them, sheets filled with loving words, secret dreams and wishes. And he asks her again, is nervous this time. Cannot sleep for days before they meet. “Will you marry me?” She smiles. “Kiss me. And yes, I will.”
